It is time to STOP Sexual Violence in Grey Bruce
WHAT PEOPLE SAID & WHAT WE CAN DO TO PREVENT IT
-
People of all ages and backgrounds in Grey Bruce want to talk about preventing sexual violence. The response to the STOP SV survey was amazing – 345 people took the survey. 45% of the participants were aged 16-40 and 55% were 40 plus.
They came from all walks of life: interested community members, advocates, police and justice, violence against women workers and people who provide services and supports.

What prevents men from being part of prevention strategies?
Sexual violence is not a ‘women’s issue’. Boys and men experience sexual violence and are impacted when women and girls experience it. Jackson Katz has an excellent You Tube that explores why men and boys need to be fully involved in SV prevention.

Almost half said they reached out to family and friends for help and support. The most commonly used services (in order of most frequently used) are: Private Counselling (14%), Police (12%), Mental Health Counselling (8%), Family Doctor (8%).
Respondents rated the help and support they received from family and friends higher than support provided by a range of services. Employers and faith based support received the lowest rating. Visit Victim Services Bruce Grey Perth for information on accessing counselling service, and VPGB for a full list of professional services.

Sexual violence is a health issue. Survey participants told us about the physical and mental health impacts of sexual violence and that these can last for years. There are free trainings available for frontline healthcare staff. Has your healthcare provider taken one of them?

Consent can be role modelled at every age. I have started talking to my toddlers. When someone says no, that needs to be respected.
-
76% think adult men have a poor or fair understanding of consent.
‘Based on my past experience and those of my close friends, I know for certain a majority of men are extremely clueless as to what actual consent is.’
-
‘Consent is going to be a huge factor in preventing sexual crimes in the future and needs to have a big emphasis on everything we do with kids so they learn it from the very beginning...having very candid conversations with older children and preteens and teens about what enthusiastic, on-going consent looks like.’
“
The issue is that not everyone feels comfortable teaching sexual violence prevention, so important areas of the conversation may be overlooked
