Grey Bruce Elder Abuse Prevention (formerly known as the Seniors Safety Network)
In 2015 concerned citizens and service providers came together looking for a way to address the abuse of seniors in Grey Bruce. Violence Prevention Grey Bruce established the Seniors Safety Network in 2017. Members come from health, social services, justice, seniors’ services, community groups and community champions.
The terms elder abuse and senior abuse describe the experience of older adults who are abused, usually by someone they know and often by someone they care about.
It is abuse whenever someone limits or controls the rights and freedoms of an older adult. The older adult is unable to freely make choices because they are afraid of being humiliated, hurt, left alone, or the relationship ending. When a spouse is abusive, it is called domestic violence. Ageism and attitudes about older adults are factors in abusive situations. Abuse can be physical, verbal, emotional, financial, sexual, spiritual or neglect.
What can neighbours, friends & family members do to help?
See it: recognize the warning signs of abuse
Name it: talk to the older adult and name your concern
Check it: ask questions, check with professionals, and community resources, help with safety planning.
